Yeah, it’s not easy, maybe it’s scary, maybe it’s totally impractical, but according to this story in Entrepreneur magazine, maybe the fifties are the time to start working for yourself. (Besides, if you’re laid off it might just be your best option.)
Now they phrase it this way. “Not ready to retire?” Assuming, apparently, that if you’re 50 you’re only working for the joy of it. I’d put it more like this. “Not ready for homelessness?”
Here’s a quote.
These days, the 30s are the new 20s, and the 40s are the new 30s. But with the nation’s 78 million baby boomers now entering their 60s at the rate of approximately 8,000 a day, the 50-and-older group has undergone a rather youthful transformation as well. What was once the typical age to start thinking about retirement has become the time to consider a career change–particularly into self-employment.
At 50 you’ve got a lot of experience. The question is do you have the skills, the resources, and the guts to make the leap. Or maybe nowadays the question is, do you have any other choice?
